As if Bridal Dress Shopping Wasn’t Enough

Last weekend I was at the Menlo Park Mall shopping with my mom, two sisters, and my sister’s friend.  We were shopping for bride’s maid dresses for my sister’s July wedding.  Exciting, yes.  But it was while shopping that it really hit me--my 24 year old sister is getting married.  This made me feel a bit overwhelmed.
However, my day suddenly became suddenly even more overwhelming as I walked into the first store.   Macy’s had already dragged out the holiday decorations.  Really, Macy’s?
This was not an isolated event.  That same weekend, while having my teeth cleaned, I heard radio DJs talking about a poll they were taking about when they should start playing Christmas music.  I couldn’t help but think “um, around Christmas time?”
I am trying to stop the lightning speed passing of these upcoming months yet the Winter holidays are being shoved down my throat.  I would give anything to slow down time for a while.  As a senior graduating early and a maid of honor for my bride-to-be sister, I have been trying to take things slowly and as they come. Needless to say, I was upset to have the holidays sneak up on me.
Don’t get me wrong, I am looking forward to this holiday season more than I have in the past few years.  I have amazing friends and family to celebrate with. I will be away in January, and I would love nothing more than to spend time with loved ones in the midst of food and gift giving.  However, as October 30 comes and goes, I still haven’t decided on a Halloween costume.
There seems to be something about our modern culture that makes living in the moment difficult.  Why are we so compelled to look ahead?  Can’t we let October be October?  By the way, where did September go?
I am enjoying my last semester on campus in spite of the this.  But, I can’t help but to wonder which was more overwhelming last Saturday: the Macy’s saleswomen trying to sell us the first dress we tried on or the Macy’s Holiday decorations.
