Last month, October, was National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as such, the American Cancer Society kicked off their Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks across the nation, including one in Delaware at the Riverfront in Wilmington. Making Strides is a non-competitive walk to raise awareness of the issue of breast cancer. It's a concern that faces us all-be it through friends, family or self.

Since Making Strides is still going on, we don't have statistics on it yet but we do have some for 2005: over 400,000 participants in 100 cities across the country joined Making Strides in 2005. Altogether more than $34 million was raised to fund research to fight breast cancer. This event is nationwide and huge. Although donations are encouraged, it is free to participate in Making Strides.

The funds raised by ACS go toward educating the public about the dangers of breast cancer, health services for early detection for the underprivileged, advocacy to involve politicians in the fight and of course, research to prevent and cure breast cancer.

Making Strides began in 1993 and has raised over $194 million. To find out more about Making Strides, general information about breast cancer or how you can help, visit www.cancer.org.

Honestly, I feel that we need to start working on awareness for other types of cancer. The survival rate for breast cancer has increased greatly over the past decade or so depending on what stage the cancer is in. I really think that we need to focus in more on ovarian cancer. After five years, the chance of survival for breast cancer is 82% compared to ovarian cancer's 35%. While we continue to donate so much money to one fund, others are left out in the dark.
