This adds value to our degree, and gives the university some positive attention. I don’t know if I speak for other Blue Hens, but for me, it amplifies my sense of UDel pride. If nothing else, it’s pretty awesome to know that the vice president of the United States sat in our classrooms, walked on the Green, and maybe even partied where we go regularly on weekends.
This got me wondering…what other UD alums have made it big?
-George Thorogood: Singer and musician, formed the band George Thorogood & The Destroyers; best known for his hit songs "Bad to the Bone" and "Move it on Over”
- George Read, Thomas McKean, and James Smith :-These three signed of the Declaration of Independence (for those of you living on Laird Campus, these names should sound especially familiar)
-Joe Flacco: Quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens
-Bob Carpenter Jr.: Named president of the Phillies in 1943, when his father, R. R. M. Carpenter Sr., bought the team for $400,000; at 28, he became the youngest owner in the major leagues (again, the name should sound familiar…)
-Thomas R. Carper: Current U.S. Senator, former U.S. Congressman and Governor of Delaware
-Steve Harris : American actor who has appeared in a number of films including Tyler Perry's Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Bringing Down The House, The Rock, The Mod Squad, and Minority Report; he is most famous for his role as Eugene Young on the legal drama The Practice.
-Matt O'Donnell:Weekday morning anchor for Action News, 6ABC
-David Plouffe : Campaign Manager of the Barack Obama presidential campaign, 2008
-David Raymond: Original Phillie Phanatic
-Lieutenant General Julian C. Smith: Commanded the 2nd Marine Division in the Tarawa fighting of World War II
-Susan Stroman: Broadway director, Choreographer, Performer
-Lodewijk van den Berg : Flew on a 1985 Space Shuttle Challenger mission as a Payload Specialist; he was the first Dutch-born astronaut,
This list is not complete; there are several other UD alumni who have made incredible accomplishments. It is exciting that the vice president elect is a former Blue Hen, but he is one of many that have made a name for themselves.
