Many children in America, even in our own small community, have never experienced that joy. Most are from underprivileged families that can barely afford food on the table, let alone gifts under a Christmas tree.
There are many ways you can get involved to help the underprivileged children in our area. You can choose from many volunteer projects such as food kitchens, but perhaps the most popular at this time of year is Toys for Tots, which is run by the Marines. There are stations set up across the nation to collect new, unwrapped toys for children whose families simply cannot afford gifts this year. This program offers many ways to get involved. Donate toys, time, or money. Many local organizations are taking donations for this event such as the Wolf Insurance Agency in Newark, Storage Atlantic in Bear, KB toys on Kirkwood Highway and Quality Inn in New Castle. For information on where you can do each of these things, visit www.toysfortots.org.
Another suggestion is to visit an orphanage. Bring a little bit of hope and love into a child's life at this time of year. And remember, Christmas isn't just about children. Visit a nursing home and bring some holiday cheer into an elderly person's heart— a lot of people in nursing homes have few visitors and rarely at that.
Remember that as easy as it is to get wrapped up in the gift receiving this time of year, that's not what it's really about. Reach out and touch someone. Sometimes the best gift you can give someone is to show you care. And sometimes, that's a gift for yourself at the same time.
