Satellite shock jock, Howard Stern, is trying to ruin TV show American Idol by encouraging audiences to vote for the show’s least talented contestant, Sanjaya Malakar.

“We’re corrupting the entire thing.  The No. 1 show in television and it’s getting ruined” said Stern, Sirius talk show host.

Eric the midget, a habitual caller to the Howard Stern show, repeatedly debates Howard’s decision to compromise the integrity of American Idol.  Even though Eric Lynch had refused to support Malakar, on March 29, Stern spliced recordings of Lynch to produce a clip of him saying “Vote for Sanjaya.”

Recently, Eric the midget has finally agreed to promote Sanjaya Malakar.

Fox has issued a statement expressing their doubt concerning Howard Stern’s impact on audiences.

“The power of true fans of ‘American Idol’ dwarfs any attempt of people trying to gain notoriety” Fox executives said.

However, Howard Stern is known for having a great impact on his listeners.  In the past, Stern has even influenced voting in New York elections. (1)

In his attempt to sabotage American Idol, Stern has teamed up with website votefortheworst.com

Votefortheworst.com aims to expose the corrupted truth about American Idol, thus encouraging people to sabotage voting and decreasing the show’s popularity.

The website states “American Idol is not about singing at all, it’s about making good reality TV and enjoying the cheesy, guilty pleasure of watching bad singing.

“We agree that a fish out of water is entertaining and we want to acknowledge this fact by encouraging people to help the amusing antagonists stick around.

“VFTW sees keeping these contestants around as a golden opportunity to make a more entertaining show.”

The website claims the early auditions are not even recorded in front of Paula, Randy, and Simon.  The producers force the singers to wear the same clothes from day to day in order to convince the show’s viewers that the multiple days of filming are the single audition they see on their TV screen.

At the initial tryouts, VFTW reports there are “good” and “bad” tables.  People who sit at the good tables will make it to the next round while people at the bad tables are immediately cut, despite their talent.

“Many of the best singers I’ve ever heard who don’t currently have record deals [are] being cut, right and left” said Afraidofpop, a singer who auditioned this year in Rutherford, NJ.

VFTW does not simply base their choice of the worst Idol on singing ability, but takes into consideration who will be the most entertaining.  Due to Sanjaya’s crazy Mohawk and bizarre sense of style, VFTW believes he has definitely proven himself to be entertaining.

Even though American Idol currently has the highest Nielsen rating (16.2) on air at this time, its Tuesday performances have decreased roughly 10% this season.  At this time last year, the show had 31 million viewers, while this season there is about 28 million. (2)   continue >>

While it's obvious that to stick around on the show you have to be attractive, I never even considered that they'd keep bad singers on board for entertainment value.

Personally, I miss scripted TV.
