However, I was not one of the many to run out the within the first couple weeks of September to check it out, but I did hear some reactions from those that did. I was told the food was pretty good, but of course, I heard much more about the night life.
A few friends told me that Kildare’s was definitely a fun place to be on weekend nights. Many favored the circular bar, and with live bands and a D.J. varying throughout the night, the dance floor was the place to be. Oh, and this seems to be the only bar on Main Street with a dress code; whether that is a good thing or not is up to you. As a poor college student searching for the cheapest place to get drinks, I asked about the prices. The reactions I got were mixed--some said it was reasonable, other suggested that Grotto’s was the place to get drinks because of their specials, and then once you've established a good buzz, head upstairs to Kildare’s. How could I resist but to check this place out?
With six other locations (Manayunk, King of Prussia, Westchester, Media, Headhouse Square and Montage), this place had to be legitimate. To avoid the lines (and to make sure I made it back for “The Office” premiere), my friend and I wandered out early on a rainy Thursday night to check this place out.
As silly as we looked, we literally scoped out the entire place. After wandering around the circular bar and peering into random rooms, Kildare’s gained our approval for atmosphere. It seemed we were the youngest ones there, but I guess that's what you get for going out at 8:00 on a Thursday night. Once we found a seat, a bartender asked for our orders. I ordered a beer on tap. She was extremely friendly and was able to answer my questions about the beer they had. There was a band setting up and the disco lights flickered on and off as they tested them out--it seemed as if the night would be a good one.
My only complaint? My beer was $4.75 (my friend's Long Island Iced Tea, $7.00). Now given I am a poor college student going out at 8:00 on a Thursday, but I have spent less for beer when I go out in Philadelphia. From what I have heard, other colleges have extremely cheap specials, better than any we have on Main Street, so the fact that this bar only priced their drinks higher than other places on Main Street is a turn off for me. I think I'll take my friend's advice--go to Grotto’s first before heading upstairs.
Overall, Kildare’s has an amazing atmosphere and maintains some class with its dress code and its pricey drinks. You won't find me there every weekend, but if you have something to celebrate, I suggest you check it out.
