Senses Fail returns with their third full-length album, Life Is Not A Waiting Room. The band changes their sounds again—this time back to the screamo/emo roots that can be heard on their first CD, Let It Enfold You. This is a big change from their last effort, Still Searching, but is still not to up to par with their first album.
While they are including the screamo mixed with the vocals of lead singer Buddy Nielsen, the latest attempt falls flat again. Life Is Not A Waiting Room does include more songs with the style that made Senses Fail famous, screamo with melodic tunes about heartache, death, and other life events. However, the band delivers poorly with the rest of the album.
“Garden State,” the third track, is a tribute to their home state, where the band grew up and began in 2002. However, the track sounds more like a pop-rock song than harder rock meshed with an emo voice. “Family Tradition,” the first single off the new album, sounds the same way. Tracks such as “Wings Like Gallows” and “Wolves at the Door,” contrarily are songs that include the screamo and vocals older fans know of Senses Fail.
“Chandelier” is the tenth track on the album sounding just like many of the favorites from Let Us Enfold You. The end of the album is where fans will see the old Senses Fail peak out from hiding, but no where else on the CD will they find it.
It is understandable for bands to evolve and change as years go by. Senses Fail did that on their last album, and they seem to have reverted back to their older style, while still including their newer pop-rock sound on Life Is Not A Waiting Room. Older fans will probably be disappointed at the new work, but should still give it a try.
Life Is Not A Waiting Room is a better CD than Still Searching, but it does not measure up to Let Us Enfold You. Still there is something the older fans will find comfort in when listening to the songs, but there are only a select few that will do this. At least the latest CD is a better representation of Senses Fail than the last.
