| by Chasidy Sisk | 10/23/06 | 667 views | So you’re finally 21 and ready to party. Ready to go to the bars and get falling down drunk. You’re going to hit them all. You go to Kate’s, Grotto’s, Deer Park. You try out every bar on Main Street. Maybe you’re content with them, but maybe you want some variety, a chance to meet different people. Delaware may be a “small wonder” but we have a wonderful selection of bars to choose from if you want to get out of that “college atmosphere”. Let’s explore some local favorites.
A few miles up Kirkwood Highway, there is a fabulous little sports bar tucked behind the shopping center next to the YMCA , Cunningham's Irish Pub. They have a pool table, a juke box, occasional live music and several tvs with different games on continually. Cunningham's features a very diverse crowd of patrons, male and female, anywhere from 21 to 80. It is a very low-key bar. Everyone is friendly and open-arrive alone and someone is bound to strike up a conversation, maybe invite you to a game of pool.
About a mile farther up Kirkwood Highway, The Good Shots Bar is located behind Accent Music. Not much going on during the week but the weekends feature a live deejay and a packed house. Mostly a younger crowd but some of the older patrons just might outdance you. There's a cover charge of $5 so show up with a bunch of friends to have fun and get your money's worth.
Tailgates, on Route 4 beside McDonald's, is a sportsbar with a mixed patronage. Tailgates features pool tables, big screen tvs and fabulous food. Bald Stewey's is on Kirkwood Highway behind Price's Corner. This is a personal favorite because of the level of comfort. They have pool tables, tvs and friendly patrons. The crowd is mostly working men of all ages during the day but don't get too discouraged guys. Women frequent the bar as well later in the evening and besides, all of the bartenders are young and female. Word to the wise-Watch out for the Long Island Iced Teas; they taste great but 2 or 3 will have you crawling out of there!
On Union Street in Wilmington is Bankshots, a nice little poolhall/bar. Take some friends up there and shoot a few games or just relax at the bar with a few beers. Either way, when you start seeing stripes on the solids, you might want to end your partying for the night.
Vivid Thursday at the old Porky's on Philadelphia Pike is a new event for Thirsty Thursdays. A young crowd gathers to party hard and shake it harder. There is a cover charge but check them out because they're always having specials for cover and drinks.
McCoys Pub is on Rt. 202 AKA Concord Pike, just over the PA line. It's a sportsbar with pool tables, tvs and contests galore (think Naughty Schoolgirls, etc.) downstairs and a laid back bar with some pretty decent entrees upstairs.
