Strip Club Coming to Main Street?

Her eyes were glistening with the horror of her past as Candy recalled the fatal night last summer when she stood upon the ashes of her still-burning motel, The Thunderbird. Burning along with the motel’s furniture were Candy’s dreams of a better life and her fantasies of one day owning a successful business. Her tears scorched the ground like fallen embers.

In December of 2006, however, Candy no longer felt that same ruin when she was given another chance. “He’s an angel, sent from God,” says Candy, referring to her banker, Roger. With Candy’s troubling credit history, the personal loan was immediately labeled “High Risk.” Roger, however, granted Candy clemency and created the means for her to open a strip club on Main Street.

Funding the club was not as difficult as receiving permission for construction from the City. Due to strict religious doctrine and government law, the adult entertainment bar had to be at least 700 feet away from any church or religious building. On Sundays, the Candy Shop must also remain closed.

With the windows completely black and signs that read, “They’re Sweet, They’re Sassy, Even a Little Naughty,” The Candy Shop is raising curiosity from passerby. Speculation has turned into rumor as whispers have been heard that The Candy Shop is a legitimate candy shop. This is a conspiracy, obviously begun by opposers of the strip club.

The title of The Candy Shop was inspired by musician 50 Cent’s profound song. “The lyrics spoke to me,” says Candy. “ ‘If you be a ho, I’ll be a ho. On the beach or in the park, it’s whatever you into.’ He immortalizes my motel with those words.”

The idea for The Candy Shop occurred with the destruction of the Stone Balloon during the summer of 2006. Stardust, Candy’s daughter, encouraged her mother to pursue her dreams. “She was always supportin’ me. Like when I become an exotic dancer at Delilah’s. She brought me flowers my opening night.”

But this encouragement has not always been present in Candy’s life. Growing up in a single parent household was difficult enough without having to endure the teasing from her classmates: “I only have three fingers on my left hand. The [expletive] kids made sure I knew that everyday of my life.” This handicap disadvantaged Candy when she realized her aspirations to become a guitarist, a pianist and hand puppeteer would be denied.

Now, with the new dance club, Candy hopes her dream can finally be realized.

And it is.

The Candy Shop, furnished with dashing style, is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The club has marble floors and stone columns built on the grounds of possibility. Intermittently placed along the walls are mirrors framed in gold and ivory. Walls are lined with black fur, from an undisclosed animal. The large stage, erected with strength and girth, stands tall below a pink curtain.

Candy and Stardust pray for acceptance and approval from the Newark community. Now, they wait for either the success or failure of their latest endeavor. Stardust says, “We belong here on Main Street. We’re just like everyone else. We’re a family owned business and we cherish that.”

What would be more interesting is if you actually wrong an article about what IS coming to Main St....a family run cupcake shop. I've had the cupcakes, they're fabulous.

Granted, this story is amusing. But it's not news.

Meh, I apologize.....had not realized this was under the "satire " tag.

If it had not been, there could actually be some legal ramifications with this story. Again, I'm sorry.

But my point is still valid...why isn't anyone doing any real reporting? (And to answer your question, I'm not because I have almost no time, I'm trying to finish my degree, although I might have a few stories I can put up)

I guess I'm just disappointed because when Dan first talked to me about this site, he seemed interested in real journalism. And while satire is fabulous and I love it, there just doesn't seem to be much journalism to be had.

Once again, you are attacking the site for incomprehensible reasons.
1) You are attacking it for what you believe it NOT is, as opposed to what it actually is. This is comparable to attacking College Humor because it never says anything serious.
2) You are attacking writers for not reporting, when you yourself claim to not have had the time to do it either. We do not control our writers. They have a right to post what they want and when they want. Controlling them strips them of their freedom and turns us into a dictatorship.

3) You have no right to judge what is "interesting" to the public. Interesting pertains to the reader, and you obviously prefer a different kind of story. I'm just curious whether or not you would have still clicked this link if it did not say "Strip Club." Currently, there are 2500 people who found this article interesting. Check the "Article Views" from your previous posts and see how the numbers compare.

You cannot be upset about journalism if you, yourself are not writing it. Do not bicker to me about some inequality, poverty, or racism if you further perpetuate it by your lack of involvement.

In response:

1) I am not attacking. I am saying that the site has turned into something that I had not expected, something that Dan had not mentioned when he was first recruiting writers. This is fact. It is not a judgment.
2) Again, I am not attacking. Merely noting that there is little actual reporting going on. THIS IS FINE, if this is what people want. If this turns into a humor site, fine. I won't be writing for it, but that's my choice and I won't criticize others for it. If you'll remember, I was apologizing for doing so, because I was WRONG, and I shouldn't have done it.
3) You're right, I don't have a right to judge. And the only reason I came here was because you sent out a message on facebook. So I won't come here anymore. I'm sure no one will mind.

Okay, and what the HELL are you talking about, inequality, poverty, or racism? Yes, I am sad that I am not involved, but I honestly do not have time because I am a full-time student and I work. My only issue with this story was that if it had not been posted under satire (which I neglected to note in my first post), then there could have been SERIOUS legal problems. That is a concern, a real one, that all writers should consider.

Again, I apologize for my initial remark, it was off-base, and wrong.

The comment about inequality, poverty and racism was to prove a point about involvement. People are vocal about issues, but until they make a stand on a street or make some form of protest, they remain uninvolved.

And, you are as welcome to this site as any other. The only problem was raising an opinion of the site on this article's page. If you have a comment about the site as a whole, it is entirely welcome and appreciated. I just ask that you post it in the Forum, where it is more relevant. As a writer of this article, I took personal offense to what you said. That's why I reacted. You are, however, perfectly welcome and able to use this site to your advantage. We want you here if you want to be here and want to be happy here.

A strip club. That's good. Another reason for women who were blessed with beauty to dance it away on some stage, just to turn on some creepy guy and to promote to the idea that women are sexual objects. that's a great thing to put on mainstreet. look at the campus, its beautiful. if you want to go to some strip joint, catch a bus to a city where the other ones are.

women are not sexual objects. but places like these make it seem okay that we are seen that way. there's more to women than a pretty body for some creep to gawk at. its bad enough how girls dress around here. i can't even walk down mainsteet anymore without feeling comfortable. if i'm in a comfy t-shirt and jeans and a group of girls walk by with all their stuff hanging out, i feel like i almost have to dress that way. i almost feel like no one will even look at me or have interest if i'm not in high heels and my chest isn't hanging out. but thats not me.
that's fine, i'd perfer not to use my body to catch attention of someone for them to be interested in me. you'll never see them again anyway, if that's all they are intested in. why do you girls do that? do you have any pride in what you can stand for? do you have any dignity for yourself? i dont' know about you girls, there's avlot more to me than just my body.
and i know i'm not being old fashion, i'm just being decent.
i think it would help if everyone was just blind. we could focus on what's important in relationships, love and trust.
all of this relates to a strip joint. putting one up is not going to help us as the human race. it will just give everyone a reason look at women as sexual objects, use their bodies for lustful reasons, and bring themselves down to a level that shouldn't even exist.

it makes me sick.

Everyone stop arguing -- the site is what it is. Jill, you fooled so many people with this article. I know a ton of people that really thought a strip club was coming including me.

And waaaa strippers. Do girl's often dress suggestively? Yes. So what? You don't have to. Not all guys even like that, though it never hurts to look. Oh yea, and why should creepy guys not get turned on? They spend a rediculous amount of money just to look at girls in strip clubs. Maybe they're hopelessly lonely and depressed and it's their only source of happiness.

oh poops. i was fooled. well, even if this isn't going to be a strip club, they are wrong in general. i guess that's what i would have to say if there was a strip club coming in my area. i just feel very strongly about the idea, and i like the fact that i can post my opinion about it.

okay but back to the 'girls dressing suggestively' thing. yeah, i do think its wrong. and you're right, i don't need to dress like that, but it makes me uncomfortable when girls around me do. not because i don't have what they have, but because it's just not a postive thing. i know that it is their decision, but its not doing any good for anybody. if you can think of one, let me know. i just know that it makes other girls feel inferior because skanky girls feel superior- even though it is pretty low for them to dress that way, its drawing attention to all the wrong parts, and it does make guys look, which doesn't lead to anything beneficial.
i guess when i think of skanky girls, it just gives a reason for some dude to yell out their window or honk or whistle, or hit on them... and it just sucks. because although physical attraction is important in a relationship, if a guy is hitting on a girl because she is showing off her stuff, he's looking in all the wrong spots. all i'm saying is there is a lot more too a woman than a body and it is more than often used as something that just gets used because the girl is putting herself out there that way, which is too special and sacred to be used like that. and because this is happening, when freshman go to parties they feel like they have to dress up and have their stuff hanging out because they feel inferior and want to get in 'party clothes', and they cycle just keeps going. its just not good.

oh and for the creepy guys who go to strip clubs just to get turned on, if they are 'lonely and depessed and its their only source of happiness' then they have to get something a little more positive going on in their life. sex should not bring happiness into someone's life, unless you are in love with that person. sex will not be happiness, it will just make you feel good. and if some dude is lonely and depressed and that's the place he thinks of going to, then he needs to go and talk to somebody because a strip club is just going to make him feel lower than where he already is.

but that's just me. maybe i am old fasioned, and if so i guess its just who i am.

Kelly- I agree with what you are saying. I was even hesitant about putting those picture up along with the article (the ones of the strippers at the bottom). We had a radio show the other day, and I just deeply feel that you should not put a dollar sign on a woman's body. It is terrible that easy money for these women is through showing of their bodies for men to google at.

In some cases, people will go to a strip club just to say they have been or just because everyone thinks it is a fun/hilarious idea. In other cases, men waste their paychecks weekly because they are lonely, sad and want some form of pleasure. You cannot put a dollar sign on pleasure, sex, etc. It should not work that way, at all. A woman's body, just like a man's, is sacred and must be treated as such.

so kelly - i hear you, but there is a fatal flaw in your comment (and i am well aware im going to get my ass kicked for saying this). The problem is not only that the girls are putting themselves out there with the revealing clothing blah blah, but that they want to do that. They are not doing to please some guy, and if they are, they are choosing to do so. Many of them love getting dressed up like "skanks". And honestly, as much as guys like myself find it degrading and disappointing, there are guys out there who love it. And you know what, let the sluts hookup with the lame dueshbag guys... are you really interested in them anyway?? I mean seriously, the guys that go after "those" girls are usually not all that concerned with getting an STD anyway, so im pretty sure your not going after them any time soon.

And you know what, there are girls out there who do have complete respect for themselves, and just want to feel sexy once in a while, is that completely absurd?

And yes, you do seem a tad old fashioned, just because of the world we live in, not that im saying its right, its just how it is....:/
